Red Boat #11

P1010046.JPG

70 x 90cm

Oil on hardboard

I'm in love with Prussian Blue...

This is done with the same palette as the previous Red Boat paintings but I added Prussian Blue... isn't it a GORGEOUS color?

As I move forward I find my the grip on my knife and brush loosening and this painting shows that new space I found with a looser hand...

I like it.

Summer Breeze #2

P1010049.JPG

Mixed Media

Oil on Acrylic

15 x 20cm

Bid on this painting

I painted both of these at the same time using high quality Acrylic paints to get the base down and then oils for the finishing touches. I really am partial to oils but I also find that acrylics are wonderful to work with as well.

Monastery SOLD

P1010044.JPG

Oil on Wood Panel

20 X 30 cm, 8 X 12"

BID ON THIS PAINTING

One of the most impressive sights are the Greek Orthodox monasteries. Around Mt. Athos you see monasteries built up from the rocks. Stone by stone they reach upward to their cells without any modern conveniences such as electricity. This painting was inspired by the monasteries around Mt. Athos, which is very near to where I live.

WIP

P1010063.JPG

Oil on MDF

50 x 70 cm

It's been a while since I posted anything. So I thought I'd put up my current work. This isn't any particular beach. It is a "soul painting" which means that I am not copying from a photo or painting onsite but letting the painting unfold and grow from the gessoed blank support to the finished product. I have my easel in the living room where I can see it all day long. This is helpful to me because in many ways the paintings seem to talk to me (no I do not hear voices and I'm not nuts). While going about my day, or opening my eyes from a prolonged asana, I'll understand what needs to be done next, or what needs to change. This also happens when working from photos but the difference is that there is a comparison between what the physical eye sees in the photograph and the painting versus what the inner eye sees as the painting moves toward creation.

I will say that my natural surroundings obviously influence what comes out of me... the colors, texture and overall feel. I am very lucky to live in such a beautiful place.

Martha's Angels / SOLD

P1010061.JPG

Oil on Panel

60 x 45 cm

This is for Martha, Aleko and Maria's daughter. I like what happened in this painting... the forms, colors and luminosity of the angels. The composition works nicely as well and I am pleased with the balance of lights and darks. Overall a joy to paint.

Gathering Poppies

P1010073.JPG

Oil on Panel

60 x 90cm

This painting is more of an expression of who I am right now than any other painting I have done so far. I'm not sure what it is about this one that makes my spirit sing every time I look at it...

The colors... there is Greece here... there is Spring... there is a sunrise or sunset depending on my mood.. there is motherhood... there is the child.... there is femininity and there is depth and continuity.

I hope you enjoy this one too....

A Red Boat #5

P1010043.JPG

Oil on linen

30 x 24

This one was fun! I painted it out on the Aegean Balcony while chatting with some of our renters. Yanni, who has a wonderful bookstore in Perea, Thessaloniki, wanted to see a white stripe on the boat. I gladly indulged and liked the outcome too. I am not used to painting with people around watching me, but I found I had no trouble at all. We had such a wonderful group of people here and I loved the diverse conversations that took place... thanks to all.

A Red Boat #4/ SOLD

P1010045.JPG

Oil on Panel

45 x 70cm

The waves were so much fun to paint.... working only with a painting knife is challenging but on the other hand, rather than worrying about endless detail, the knife frees the hand and captures the energy of what's being painted....

A Red Boat / SOLD

P1010044.JPG

Oil on Canvas

24 x 30cm

BID ON THIS PAINTING

I usually paint in bright colors. Today I am in a more subtle mood and decided to limit my palette to cobalt blue, raw umber, white and scarlet lake. No brushes either... palette knife and only one at that. I love what happened and how the mood I was looking for just happened. No struggles with this one which tells me it was the right move on my part.... that I needed to move in this direction at this point in my life.

Hope you enjoy this one as much as I do!

Path to the Sea SOLD

P1010049.JPG

Oil on canvas

30 x 70cm

This painting is now in Beth's loving home in New York. Thank you!!!

This painting is inspired by a dirt road right at the bottom of our hill. I took a mind-photo one spring morning as my dreamlets and I were walking to the beach. The wild flowers were everywhere and the colors vivid as Spring herself. The olive trees are over 100 years old yet they are only in the Spring of their lives. I finished this painting recently. Spring isn't officially over but it is already summer here.

Life moves in and out of her cycles... we must never forget to live with wonder as we too flow in and out of those cycles.
